Lawn care in autumn – important information and tips

Lawn care in autumn – important information and tips

The summer and thus the pleasant sunny and warm days are unfortunately drawing to a close. However, your lawn doesn't regret it that much. The constant heat and drought that are so stressful for him are finally over. Very often, no matter how hard you try to water, mow and fertilize, by the end of the summer months the lawn will lose a bit of its shine. The intense green during the spring season can hardly be seen. Here and there you may see dry, even completely yellowed and bald spots. The good news is that with a little diligence and help from nature, your lawn will begin to recover in the fall months. You can find out how to prepare it for the coming cold winter days in the following hints and tips for lawn care in autumn.

The condition of the lawn is one of the first things visitors notice in your yard

to water

During the fall season we experience more rains which are much better for the lawn than the violent but brief summer storms. No matter how often you water, nothing compares to calm, all-day and sometimes several days of rain. It irrigates the roots deeply and restores the healthy appearance of our entire garden.

Even so, relying solely on the rain is not a good idea. Many gardeners make the mistake of stopping watering as early as the end of July. In fact, the lawn should be watered at least until the first frost. It's best to do this activity early in the morning between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. or in the afternoon between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. once every 4 to 8 days.

Mowing and scarifying

October or November is the time when the lawn is mowed, depending on the temperature. This gardening should be done very carefully. The lawn should not be too short or too high. The optimal length is between 5 and 7 cm, depending on the variety. Low-cut grass can easily freeze in the first frost, while taller grass results in the retention of higher soil moisture. This, in turn, is an optimal prerequisite for the development of fungal diseases.

You will also need to remove old grass, roots, moss and dead organic matter by the end of October. This operation is known as scarifying. Depending on the size of the lawn, you can use a special electric scarifier or a pendulum. This gives you a significant boost to the new spring growth, also destroys a large part of the weeds. Gather the autumn leaves

Never leave fallen autumn leaves, especially in piles, on the lawn for several days. The lawn underneath will not turn yellow, but will also attract earthworms into the soil, which can cause significant damage during this time. Gather the leaves with a rake or a special leaf blower and dispose of or compost them.

Fertilize

Fertilization is extremely important for lawn care in autumn. To do this, use combined fertilizers that contain “slowly digestible” nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace elements. Immediately after scarifying, the lawn should be fed once at the end of September, beginning of October and, if possible, in November. The use of ordinary nitrogen fertilizers during this period is not preferable. Namely, nitrogen stimulates the growth of new shoots that cannot withstand winter frosts.
